Shredded Recycled Rubber
A shredded recycled rubber safety surface is a major upgrade from a wood fiber surface
that you will enjoy for years and years to come. We like the fact that shredded
rubber is a recycled, very “green” product and its use keeps tens of thousands of
used tires from winding up in our landfills. It perfectly fulfills funding options
emphasizing green technology. The choice of colors is also a big plus. (We really
like the blue!) As long as it's well maintained, it will stay that way indefinitely.
Unlike the wood fiber surface, plant growth is virtually impossible.
Your shredded rubber surface will need a containment system, heavy duty landscape
fabric, and means for
ADA
access. On the downside for this type of surface: it is a "loose fill" surface and
the material will slowly migrate in pants cuffs, pockets and the like. It will need
light replenishment periodically (think about 5- 10% per year). Shredded rubber
is quite heavy and will not float, migrate with water flow or blow away even under
hurricane force winds.
Delivery: Shredded rubber is delivered in 2000 lb. “super sacks”.
Whoever will be receiving the shipment will need to have a fork lift or similar
equipment capable of handling these pallets.
Installation: Super sacks are unloaded by fork lift as close as
possible to the play area. KIDSAFE uses a mini loader to walk the material carefully
into the play area.
Maintenance: Includes visual inspection and regular blowing with
a leaf blower to remove leaves or other organic materials, and regular raking to
keep high traffic areas from hollowing out. Occasional light replenishment is needed.
Rubber mats under swings and slide exits are a big help.
We think you will be very glad to go with the shredded rubber option. The addition
of color is wonderful, the impact attenuating properties are beyond excellent and
all safety factors are high. The material is clean and 100% latex free. If the maintenance
required is still a problem for you and your purchase budget allows, we encourage
you to look at our best option, a rubber tile
surface.
